Chile can boast about being number one in the world on many things! It is the longest country, has the most Nobel poets, the largest pool, the driest desert and more than 1,300 volcanoes
Chile is the showcase of South America’s wine production, the 5th largest wine exporter in the world, and the 10th for fine wines. It’s harvest season!
It’s isolated geography is positioned with the Andes to the East, providing favourable air currents, good drainage and water source from 2 rivers and its melting snow. Along with a fertile basin with high plateaus, the Central Valley has 8 vinification valleys. The best known is the Aconcagua, and its mountain peak is the highest in the Americas.
Vines were brought by a Spanish explorer in 1523. French wine makers were also brought in to develop their industry after France was ravaged by Phylloxera (insect that feeds on plant roots).
Because of its sandy and volcanic soil (the bug is unable to dig to attain the roots), phylloxera never plagued this country’s vineyards. Their vines are twice as old as France and California. The vineyards have ungrafted vines that are deep rooted below the soil, producing smaller high quality yields rich in nutrients
The most important varietal is Carmenere, and its provenance is Bordeaux, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir are also prominent.
Chile primarily produces red wine, and it struggles to be recognized as a high end quality producer after years of exporting inexpensive Cabernet Sauvignon. It must find its rightful place for its fine wines to succeed with a sizable audience.
