It is a hot travel destination for many seeking a holiday filled with good local artisanal fodder from foods and wines from this picturesque steeped hilled wine-clad slopes that offer a large variety of grapes under vinification.
Bordering Friulli Venezia Guila in Italy and squeezed between Austria and Hungary, this country is famous for its wines largely due to the iconic Josko Gravner, the father of the modern Orange wine which he began making in 1997, and thus a leader in the movement of Biodynamic and Organic practices in wine making.  He is considered one of the greatest Italian vignerons.
As a child, the Gravners (sr & jr.)  needed to cross the border from Italy everyday to maintain the other side of their vineyards situated in the former communist Yugoslavia.   Today there are no hard borders and vineyards lay on the hills and the Alps of these two countries freely.
Mr. Gravner uses various indigenous grapes from both countries to make his exceptional ancestral simple wines layered in ruggedness yet so elegant with purity and complexity.  His mandatory rule of never releasing a wine before 7 years after harvest has much to do with the finished product and fitting with one of his quotes that “a good producer is not a good salesman”
